5 Bad Habits That Are Making Your Anxiety Worse

Anxiety is often a reaction to life’s daily stressors. We’ve probably all experienced anxiety to some extent whether due to a big event, deadline or setback. There are many reasons to feel anxious that are considered normal human behavior. However, since anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric disorder in the U.S., it’s important to recognize when anxiety becomes excessive.

If you are one of the 19 million Americans who suffers from an anxiety disorder, these 5 habits could be making your anxiety worse.

  1. A Daily Cup of Coffee. Caffeine is a stimulant that causes people to feel awake and sometimes jittery when consumed in excess. For someone suffering from an anxiety disorder, the caffeine could increase common symptoms like a racing heart which can trigger a panic attack.
  2. Consuming Alcohol. Unlike coffee, alcohol can work as a depressant. It’s often associated with feeling calm and relaxed but it can actually add to your anxiety in the long run. Alcohol and/or substance abuse have many risks for one’s mental and physical health.
  3. A Poor Diet. A diet full of sugar, carbohydrates, and processed foods can increase your anxiety. Even though there’s no diet that can cure anxiety, eating lean proteins, vegetables and drinking plenty of water can help you feel better physically and mentally. An earlier article posted by COPE Psychiatry discussed The Nordic Diet and the benefits it can have on one’s mental health.
  4. Inactivity. Relaxing on the couch all day might seem like a good way to stay calm, but there’s a connection between your mood and activity level. Don’t sit for long periods of time. Get up and get moving to help fight anxiety.
  5. Procrastination. If you have anxiety, there’s nothing worse than having a task looming over your head. Try to create a schedule that balances your work and professional life. Develop a self-care routine that allows time for your hobbies. Stay focused at work by creating small goals and “to do” lists which can create a sense of accomplishment.
