Resilience, Mental Health, and Renewed Hope for 2021

The last month of the year is traditionally filled with reflection upon the past 11 months. It’s a time when many people look ahead to the new year with fresh resolutions and optimism. This year, however, seems a lot different.

If there is one word that sums up the shared global experience we all faced in 2020, it’s resilience. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as ‘the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.’

Let Resilience Carry You Into 2021

Life doesn’t come with a road map. Perhaps this year, more than any other year, we faced new challenges. This year was full of twists and turns that caused us to face life-changing situations and stressful situations. It’s OK if you are feeling physically and emotionally exhausted at this point. The most important thing to do is slow down and check in on the way you feel.

As we look ahead to 2021, it’s essential to renew your optimism and hope. Building resilience is a quality that allows us to face obstacles, overcome challenges, hardship and, adversity instead of being defeated by them. Social-distancing, quarantine, and COVID-19 won’t last forever…but resilience can.

Being resilient doesn’t mean that a person won’t experience stress, sadness, and challenges. Those who have faced major challenges and trauma commonly experience emotional pain. Resilient people find ways to navigate tough circumstances and move forward in flexibility. Adapting to circumstances as you navigate through them gives you the power to emerge successfully.
